Terry Fator on America's Got Talent
Dan @8:44pm

Ventriloquism is getting a very big boost because of America's Got Talent's star ventriloquist performer Terry Fator. Tonight he performed singing the song "Unforgettable", one of my favorites, and blew me away with his ability to create a completely female voice for his partner who sings perfectly on pitch while he sang in his own voice. His lip control is a thing of beauty because there is none. He is truly one of the best ventriloquists out there and I am sure he is going to make it into the top 8 for next week. If you haven't seen him take a look on NBC's web site:

THIS GUY IS GREAT!!!

  1. Although this site is a true tribute to ventriloquism, it is also a tribute to it's creator who has unselfishly a great amount of time and effort as well as his heart into this website. Dan and others like him are the reason for the renewed interest in ventriloquism.

  5. Would anyone by any chance know the email address or any other way to contact the people from England who were doing the documentary during the convention? I am anxious to get a copy of the video taken of me during my open mike session if such a video exists. As they asked me to sign a release I'm thinking maybe they took one. Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated. I was the one with the yellow duck (Dazzle duck from Axtell).
    Thanks.

Figure Maker Revello Petee
Dan @6:31am

One of the rare American figure makers from the golden age of ventriloquist was Revello Petee. He made figures in the 1930's and 40's and his figures, he claims were used by some of the more famous ventriloquists of the time such as Max Terhune of movie fame and Tommy Wonder of Magic fame. He was a self taught carver but he did learn a lot from his father who was from France.

He put out a news letter called" Double Talk " which was a typewritten 4 page flyer and it talked about the current events and techniques of ventriloquism of that time.

Foy Brown said that the Revello Petee figures were the best ever made and even though Foy Brown himself was a figure maker he used the Petee figures in his own act as his main figures. Please click here to see the figures in my collection that Foy used.

Revello Petee figures were sold through the Kanter's Magic shop from Philadelphia Pa. and I have added the add copy from that catalogue for you to see.

Click Pictures for Larger View

Unfortunately his figures today are very scarce and I only know of a couple examples and they are all privately owned and there are examples in the Vent Haven museum. Revello did put his business card tacked inside the head like Marshall so you can identify them if you find one. Pricing on his figures is very hard since they are not too common but they don't seem to go much over $1500.00 when you do find one. I do hope you enjoy looking at the catalogue pages and reading some of his advertisement.

  1. The brochure was very inspiring. I have misspelled Revello's last name for a long time, and believe Dan has two "t" in last name under Figure Collection too. I know the brochure must be right. He really made a fine figure and must have been some influence on Marshall and for Revello to say he took his hat off to him.

  2. It would seem that these figures been repainted in quite a different fashion than the originals look closely at the Rudy's eyes and eyebrows, they don't match the press release picture at all. Also the mouth around the Randy figures mouth evidently used to have more of a minstrel style paint than it does now.
Just thought you might want to check it out.

Comments by Mean John Dean - July 27, 2007 @7:49pm

(You are correct on the repaint. Foy was always repainting the figures and as matter of fact when I purchased them included was a bottle of his special paint formula. Sorry I didn't mention that. But these are there Revello Petee figures and have the Petee cards inside the heads. Dan)

It's Over
Dan @7:58am

The convention is over and I am just now unwinding. It was just a great time and I had more fun than I ever expected. The video blogging was a last minute decision on  Steve's and my part but boy am I happy we did it. It was my sincere pleasure to be able to sort of share my time at the convention with all of you.

We have some exciting things that will be posted shortly from the convention that I know you will like.

I made friends with many newbie red dot people and was also met with great respect and excitement by many folks that have visited VentriloquistCentral and I want to thank all of you publicly for all your great accolades. It is apparent that my enthusiasm for this wonderful art is loved and shared by all. Thanks again.

There were quite a few of us at the convention all wearing the VentriloquistCentral tee shirts and Mark James ( fantastic ventriloquist ) dubbed us the

" VentriloquistCentral black shirt motorcycle gang"

of course he instantly became a member and got a shirt. We were all proud to walk around with our site displayed. Lots of fun.

So again my sincere thanks to everyone and I can't wait to see everyone again next year.

Technical Issues
From Steve – Webmaster

The video blog was a last minute idea Dan and I had for the Vent Haven ConVENTion. We really didn’t work out all the “techie” stuff, just “shot from the hip”.

Now that I’m back in my office, I’m getting a few emails about some technical problems…mostly, nothing is coming up on the blog page. After doing some quick checking, everything is set up correctly.

However, it seems that I put too many blogs on one page and what happens is when you click on the blog page (this page)…..ALL the blogs are trying to load up at once (and quite frankly it’s quite a bit of information).

So, until I can remedy the situation, if you can be patient while the blogs are loading, it should work. You should be able to view the videos.

Depending on your Internet connection (even broadband will take some time), give it about 5-15 minutes, then click on the “Play” button of the video blog you wish to watch. If it still isn’t coming up, wait a little longer. Then if you STILL have problems, contact me and I’ll see if I can help.

I’m sorry about the inconvenience. I thought there may be a few bugs in doing this video blog from the Vent Haven ConVENTion….but I also figured the “pros” would outweigh the “cons”.

Thanks for your patience.

Steve Hurst
Webmaster

Guest Blog - Bill Nelson

(Bill Nelson asked that this be posted on Ventriloquist Central Blog)

"McElroy Magic" by Greg Claassen

Tonight I am very honored to report that, as a gift from Greg, I have received book #2, (with a very kind inscription), of his incredible guide to building a McELROY replica. And upon reading it, Greg credited me with so much of the creation of his first six replicas that I'll probably need to go out tomorrow and buy a larger hat size...if I wore hats.

The book is not only a step-by-step guide, but also contains many color images of, not only the six replicas, but other McELROY figures as well. Plus it’s a personal journey of discovery, and Greg’s own personal misgivings about ever attempting to build a replica of the wonderful AUTOMATA that have become George and Glenn’s lasting, living legacy.

IT IS AN AMAZING BODY OF WORK BY AN AMAZING AND TALENTED ARTIST AND ENGINEER.

I highly recommend this guide to everyone, whether you ever attempt to build a McELROY figure or not.

Ventriloquist Figure Collecting.....Ken Spencer
Dan @6:44am

Lower end figure makers have been covered so I now must step up the discussion and head into the more expensive range. The maker I have decided to discuss is Ken Spencer. He was a prolific builder and spanned a career of both performing and building for 4 or 5 decades.

Ken built his figures in the manner of the early makers Mack and Marshall. He actually worked a bit with Marshall. He branched out on his own and made some very fine figures and he certainly had a look for his figures that were all his own. You can instantly tell a Spencer figure usually because of his comic looking faces and the turned up nose. The Great Lester actually used a Ken Spencer figure as his last Broadway Eddie.

He made figures that were slot jaw only right up to fully loaded figures in keeping with the McElroys and Frank Marshall. If you check my figure collection page and scroll down to Ken Spencer you will see these examples. Ken also had a very distinctive style to his painting. It was very soft with a lot of pink shading and he usually painted in the eye lashes. His bodies were sturdy structures and his hands again were unique. The thumb section of the hand was very large emphasizing the muscle of the thumb.

Pricing on his figures is of course subjective but I feel they are not too much money yet. They will bring from $800.00 to 1500.00 most of the time. There are examples of his work that have sold for a lot more. I myself paid more , but you can get a rather nice example of his work in this price range. So keep your eyes open and study his look and I am sure you will find one of his figures to add to your collection.

I really like Ken Spencer figures and I feel they have the right look on stage when performing. I think anyone who collects should have at least one of his figures in their collection.

Clothing and Your Figure
Dan @6:35am

Clothing a figure has always been a fine point of interest for me with my figures. I will not just go and buy a shirt and pants and shoes. I first decide what I think the figure would be best looking dressed as , child, adult, work, dress or play. Then I decide on the clothing and I am kind of fussy in that I like the cloths to be from the period that the figure was made. I don't like a figure made in the 1940's or 1950's to be wearing clothing from 2007.

I scour the flea markets and yard sales for children's clothing and again I am fussy. If the clothes has holes or seams coming apart or are overly stained I will not buy them. You will be surprised at what is out there that is very usable.

I was very fortunate that I found a woman selling off her parents remnants from a shoe store. I asked if she had any kids dress shoes and she said she thought she did. About a week later she contacted me and I purchased about 50 pair of wonderful dress children's shoes from the 1950 and 1960 era. The shoes can be used on later period figures because a standard black oxford shoe is the same today as it was back then.

The only clothing article I find hard to get are socks. They are never for sale at yard sales but I did find that if you go to the dollar store sometimes they have children's socks that are great with striped colors in the brown and also grey tones. I will buy a dozen pair at a time when I see them.

Another problem I myself have is weather to open the seam on a jacket for the figure. If I have found a wonderful 1950's two tone rockabilly jacket, like the kind Marshall used on his figures, I will not open the seam. Those jackets today are very hard to find and are collectible in their own right. Cutting them open only devalues them. The antique purist in me strikes again. You can slip your hand under the bottom of the jacket and preserve the value.

I think that because of watching Jerry Mahoney as a kid, I just love the look of a bow tie on a ventriloquist figure. I purchase them where ever I may be and see them. I have some that are 60 years old and some that are new. I use the appropriate age tie on the like age figure. I just think it is a great look. I do have a few figures with regular ties as well. But on a figure the bow tie to me is the way to go.

Shirts are the easy item. For the most part I like a plain solid color either white, yellow or blue. I will purchase these new for all vintage figures. I go to a parochial school store to purchase them. They sell them as small as size 3 and they are perfect. I like the fact that the new shirt gives you a great stiff collar so that when you clip on the bow tie it just looks great. So I hope this helps you with ideas for dressing your figure.

Guest Blog - Tom Basso

Pete Michaels at the Treehouse Comedy Club

Hello Dan,

Please use my 'review' of Pete Michaels at the Treehouse Comedy Club on your website.

See you in VENTUcky next week.

Best wishes ~
Tom Basso

Hello ~

I usually don't post to the list very often but after seeing Pete Michaels headline at 'The Treehouse Comedy Club' (in Danbury, CT.) last Saturday night I felt compelled to review his act and let you know about this multi-talented entertainer.

Pete began his 65 - minute set with his stand-up comedy.  His memories of Italian stereotypes, his Italian grandmother, the wooden spoon, etc. kept me and the audience laughing.

After the stand-up came the VENT portion of his act.  He brought out 'Papa' and kept the laughs coming with this loveable senior citizen from Italy.  Pete's comedic timing, characterization and expert manipulation of 'Papa' imbued 'life' into this character.  'Papa' ended by singing the very poignant song - 'Wooden Heart'.  It was indeed a pleasure to watch Pete perform with 'Papa'.

Next came 'Krelmin', an out-of-this-world, fast-talking alien.  'Krelmin' finished his time with an upbeat karaoke that covered 50 years of rock'n'roll.  Pete's stage time was nearly over but he recruited two volunteers from the audience to assume the roles of his 'human dummies'.  Pete slipped the 'Sonny Bono' mask over the female volunteer and the 'Cher' mask over the male volunteer and had them face the audience and provided them with the singing voices of 'Sonny & Cher' doing 'I Got You Babe'.

This was an instant hit with the audience.  In my opinion, this was the absolute BEST performance that I've ever seen Pete Michaels do.  Please note that I've probably seen more 'live' performances of Pete Michaels (in a variety of venues - comedy clubs, stages and fundraisers) than anyone on this list !

Please visit his website to check out his schedule http://www.petemichaels.com
Please make it a high priority item to see Pete Michaels if he is ever performing in your area...

Best Wishes ~
Tom Basso ~

Selling of Ventriloquist Figures
Dan @6:54am

I have a had a few inquiries as to why I am offering some of my figures for sale from my collection and the answer is pretty simple. In the real world most of us just do not have unlimited funds. I am one of those. I have learned that you must , at times, sell items that you hate to part with to allow for the arrival of new items. This is true of ventriloquist figures as well.

I am constantly searching for new Marshall figures and sometimes when they appear you had better be ready or you will miss them. The convention is quickly approaching and usually there is a Marshall or two that shows up and I want or should I say need to be ready to be able to make a deal.

The figures from my collection that I have offered for sale in my July 4th pre convention figure sale ( click here for more ) are great examples of each of these makers crafts and would be a great figure for anyone else's collection or performer for that matter. I pride my collection for being a high quality collection. So please check them out and see if any one of them that is for sale would be for you. You will be happy with one I am sure.

Upgrading is the cornerstone of creating a great collection. This was true even with W.S. Burger. He did a lot of wheeling and dealing and was constantly upgrading. I did have a few people that emailed and were kind of upset that I would sell some of my figures but this is just what happens to make the collection grow and get better so to all those who were cringing at the thought of me selling off a few figures, take heart the collection will get better.

Arguing With Myself - Jeff Dunham Live
Dan @6:51am

I was at my local coffee shop yesterday morning July 5th and was chatting with the fellow next to me about my going to the ventriloquist convention and he mentioned to me that a ventriloquist was performing at the local comedy club. I opened the newspaper and sure enough Jeff Dunham was performing at the Kowloon Restaurant in Saugus Ma. last night. One show only. I shot home, made a call to the club and purchased all that was left (general admission) tickets. They were off to one side but were still great seats.

Jeff opened his show with a 20 minute stand up comedy act that was just as funny as any other stand up comic out there. He had the entire audience in the palm of his hand. He was so smooth and together and his timing was superb. You barely caught your breath and you would be keeled over with laughter again.

After his stand up he brought out Walter. I must tell you I can never see his act with Walter too many times. Walter has that sharp nasty attitude and really knows how to make the people scream with laughter. I saw Jeff perform here at the Kowloon last year and this time everything he did with Walter was different. It seems to me that Walter really does have his own personality and can come up with one liners at will. Sitting off to the side as I was you really got the illusion that Walter was a living breathing character. Jeff's manipulation of him was superb as well as his lip control. They are truly a team and a joy to watch perform.

Next Jeff brought out ACHMED the dead terrorist. Now this is one of Jeff's new characters that he used on his special he recorded about 6 weeks ago in Washington DC. I myself found the jokes this character used a bit less humorous than I anticipated but still he was funny especially when he was told by Jeff that he was dead. That was a very funny bit. I think it will take a bit more time to truly develop this character into a bigger part of the Jeff's routine.

Of course he ended his show with Peanut and Jose Jalapeno on a stick. Both of these characters are tried and true and need no comment. His routine with them has been the same for a long time and Jeff has them down pat.

I waited until everyone had left to see if I could talk with Jeff for a moment but I was told he would not come out to see anyone. This really disappointed me. I brought a Ventriloquistcentral.com tee shirt with me to give him but as they say se la vie.

So to sum up I think Jeff is the consummate entertainer and in today's working group of ventriloquists he is without question one of the best. Thanks Jeff for topping off my 4th of July celebration.

All I can say is it was a very very entertaining evening and a great preamble to the convention in a week and a half.

  1. Thank you, Dan. I wanted to apologize to you and everyone else within the Vent Central community for putting both feet in my mouth just recently with regards to my last forum entry. Words cannot express how sorry I am.
I learned a very important lesson.

  2. I had to work the night Jeff played here in KC about 3 or 4 weeks ago. I still haven't seen him live yet.

  3. Hey Dan, I headed to Houston a few weeks back to catch Jeff's act. It was my first time seeing him live. I managed to get a seat center stage, on the edge (I rested my elbow on the stage).

I had a really great time as well. I sent a note back to him on my card, I was hoping to get a chance to meet him as well, but it didn't happen.

I found out he is coming to San Antonio this Sept. I just may head out to see him again.

Happy 4th of July Sale
Dan @7:47am

Wow the fourth of July is here and so in the great American tradition I am going to make a spectacular offer for all of you to purchase some of my ventriloquist figures. I have not sold any figures in quite a bit of time but with the Vent Haven convention quickly approaching I will be going with the hopes of buying some great figures and thought I would make it easy for all to purchase some fine figures even if you are not heading out to Kentucky. So today these figures from my collection will be up for sale. Take a look at them and see if one or two or all of them are something for you.

Two Weeks to Vent Haven Convention
Dan @6:15am

Only a couple days over 2 weeks and all the fun begins at the Vent Haven convention. I am so excited that the convention is finally upon us. It will be so nice to again be among the crowd of people that has the same thing on their mind as me. Ventriloquism !!! Most of the time around here at home in Boston when ever I comment or my wife Helen comments that I collect ventriloquist figures people look at me like I have 2 heads. They look at my wife and say" Ventriloquist Dummies?" how strange......So being able to be with everyone who has the same love as I do is something I really look forward to.

I love everything about the convention too. The workshops give you insight into the art itself, the shows from the junior to the professionals are just fantastic and of course for me the dealer's room is the best. I of course will be hunting for the antique figure that makes me say "Scotty watty doo doo daa !" so if you are coming to the Vent Haven and bringing your figure to sell make sure you look for me. I will be the one in the tee shirt that says Ventriloquistcentral.com. Now there will be others in that tee shirt so make sure you look at the name tag before selling your figure to someone else.

I am hoping I can do some blogging for everyone to read right from the convention so that I can keep you all informed as to what is happening as it happens. I know everyone can't be there so this way you all will have the chance to kind of partake of the convention.

If you are going to the convention and you haven't got a Ventriloquistcentral.com tee shirt you still have time to get one before the convention starts. So hop on board and show everyone you are a part of our great community and wear your tee at the convention. It will be a great time again I am sure and I truly can't wait to see everyone.
