June 2012 Newsletter

Comments from Dan

Next month is the Venthaven ConVENTion and I can't wait. For me going to ConVENTion has become, almost like a great family get together and getting together with all my friends every year is simply a treat that is very hard to put into words. I simply love the comradery that is shared by all who attend.

But for me one of the best parts about the ConVENTion is attending the Junior Open mike session. These youngsters that perform every year simply blow me away with every aspect of their performances.

They put together great routines, practice like crazy on the manipulation of the characters and of course their lip control. Some of these youngsters put the adults to shame. That is not something I say lightly but factually. These kids are fantastic and when you see them perform you will understand exactly what I mean.

Remember, Jeff Dunham was one of these kids that performed every year and look where he is today. It is very possible that one of these current children that performs each year will be the next.

But...you have to attend to be able to see this development of the newer generation of ventriloquists.

Enjoy the rest of the newsletter.

"The incremental lessons are brilliant because they get
impatient students like myself to focus on the foundations.
Tom really knows his subject and more importantly, knows how to teach it.”

David Pitts, MrPitts.com

“I loved Tom’s course! There is nothing like this out there.
Beginners will learn the art of ventriloquism properly from the ground up, and experienced vents will be able to refresh their basics. With the extras and bonuses, Tom is offering a real valuable resource to the vent community and beyond!”

Ventriloquist Barbara Baxter on TV

If you’ve gone to the Vent Haven ConVENTion the past few years then you’ve sure seen ventriloquist Barbara Baxter (and if you haven’t, you’re missing out). Barbara is a delightful person and was on a local television access channel in her area recently. She sent us the video to share with the ventriloquist community.

McQuisto and His Real Name

McQuisto was his stage name but in real life he was Fred B. Crouch aka Frederick Bernard. He lived in Woodford England and after intense research all that was found about him was that he had a son who was in the RAF during World War II and perished in the protection of England at that time.

Cutting Cloths For Ventriloquist Figures

Something that is always on the mind of the ventriloquist while dressing their figure is if they should cut the clothing to accommodate the access to the head stick. This is a common thought and I myself have had to make the choice many times.

The Ultimate Guide to Building Your Own Ventriloquist Figure, Vol 1

“The ULTIMATE Guide To Building Your Own
Ventriloquist Figure, Volume 1”

"Steve's course is very good too! You can actually see projects being worked on and see how he handles them instead of just reading about it (not that the books aren't worth having too!)."

Gary Koepke

“The ULTIMATE Guide To Building Your Own Ventriloquist Figure, Volume 1” is a step-by-step system from start to finish, so you can create your very own ventriloquist figure.  Now you can become a ventriloquist figure builder. This guide will answers all your questions, show you all the short-cuts, and give you a quick and easy paint-by-the-numbers way to making your own ventriloquist figure-- even if you don’t think you can do it.

"Hi Steve,

I purchased the “The ULTIMATE Guide To Building Your Own Ventriloquist Figure, Volume 1”, from you last year and have finished my dummy now.

It has not taken that long to do but I have only been able to do little bits to it here and there so thats where the months have gone.

I would love to take this opportunity to thank you for putting this course together. Building a dummy has been a long term ambition of mine right from child hood when I used to make cardboard dummies.

Now all I need to finish the one I have made from your course is to clothe him. As soon as I have clothes for him I will send some photos for you to see.

Any way thanks again and look forward to hearing from you in the future."

"The DVD course is everything your advertisement claims it to be! It is truly worth much more than the amount asked! Thank you very much."

"Steve, I purchased your Ultimate Guide To Building Your Own Ventriloquist Figure Vol.1 DVD's just over five months ago. Let me first say, these are a MUST HAVE! I have always wanted to build my own figure and your DVD's gave me the confidence to get started as well as valuable information with the whole process! I took your advice on using the Fast Mache' method and it works! That advice in itself saved me a lot of frustration since this was my first time at figure making. I now know I can begin my second figure and it will be even more exciting than the first one. The information in the Ultimate Guide DVD's are invaluable! I enjoy watching them over and over again to gain more insight on figure building. I can't wait to get into the mold making process and duplicate one of my own figure heads! The Ultimate Guide DVD's were exactly what I was looking for and needed! Thanks so much for creating them. You truly are an inspiration to me with all the nuts and bolts of information you share in order to produce a ventriloquist figure."

Thanks Again!

One of the early Ventriloquist figure Makers in the US was Shaw. He was a mannequin maker and did window displays but he also made vent figures. I am happy to share with you this very rare wooden figure made by Shaw sometime around the turn of the 20th century. This figure is typical of his work in that it has leather for the mouth and the hands are the stylized carved fingers.

Final Thoughts

I always try to be fresh and present to you everything I possibly can on the blog each day that will be of interest whether it be a current news item concerning ventriloquism or a ventriloquist or something from the past like a figure maker or a ventriloquist figure.

I must tell you it is a job and if you have ever tried to do this you will find it is not easy. That being said I am looking for your input to help keep the blogs flowing.

In the past we have received many emails asking for items of interest but as of late things have slowed down so I am asking you What Would You Like to see or for me to talk about.

Feel free to ask me about anything from figures in the Ventriloquist Central Collection to Ventriloquists to Manipulation of Figures to Lip Control well you get the idea.

Go here and leave your comments to tell me what you would like!

Till next time,
Dan
